Walker Art Gallery

A day in the Capital of Culture

I've never visited Liverpool before but thought that the blog would be a great excuse for my first trip.

The first place we visited was the Walker Art Gallery, we had aimed to see the "Age of Steam" exhibition but it had shut the day earlier! Instead the main exhibition were Ben Johnson's Liverpool Cityscapes.

The first exhibition was a collection of scultptures, these were mostly huge, imposing pieces like the one shown (the photographs get fewer as I was told off!).

Next was an exhibition of how design has changed over time, this was my favourite exhibition in the gallery. There was a collection from Vivienne Westwood from the age of punk rock to Juicy Couture tracksuits from the modern day. The section named "Why Decorate?" showed how items such as

vases and statues were much more valuable if they were decorated appropriately. This exhibition really emphasised the importance of design.

The main exhibiton was of Ben Johnson's cityscapes. This was a collection of paintings that showed panoramas of placed like Jerusalem, Hong Kong and Paris. The largest was that of Liverpool which he was commisioned to paint in 2005. The detail of these pieces was phenomenal, (wasn't allowed to take pictures) so much so that I thought they were produced on a computer. It was unbelieveable to think that such a huge piece of work was painted by hand (although it did take 3 years to do).

I really enjoyed the Walker Art Gallery, it was interesting to look at the mixture of old and new work and how design has developed in the last few decades.
